Strangely, though, they're probably making at least twice what you are and have ten times the job security.

How's this sound? "Public" radio station; a town of 14,000; adding up county-by-county numbers from miles around, Arbitron shows peak listening at about 1500 in its best quarter hours....

Staff? Eight or nine fulltime (who don't do a whole lot each), two or three parttime, two or three volunteers.
Budget? $3.2 million.

One thing, though: they are "living in fear" that that level of "funding" may not continue and that "slashes" and "drastic cuts" may have to be made.....

Are you talking PBS, or NPR, or a university-affiliated NCE station? PBS and NPR are national networks. I'm not aware of PBS doing radio, but I may be wrong. As far as I know, NPR is totally radio and nothing else. A university affiliated NCE station may have a staff of 8 or 9 full-time employees for a 24/7/365 operation which would include programming, front office, engineering, and any teaching positions contained within the broadcast operation. Many NCE stations maintain several translators that repeat the mother ship's programming in distant markets, so there's time and money in maintaining those outposts. I'm not defending any of the players here (and I know you loathe Public radio, Arp, so you're not unbiased on the topic) but 8 or 9 full-timers isn't necessarily a huge overhead.

Actually, the only way one can be unbiased about it is to loathe it! Without seeing right through the pretentiousness and "gubmint is god, and communism is the savior" paradigm, it is impossible to be objective about it!

Oh, gosh, no....of course not! I'd like to see at least twice that in most situations!

My point is that that tiny number of people, who are significantly less-talented and do little compared to their commercial counterparts, personally take home the bulk of a $3.2 million budget and "live in fear" that it'll be "slashed!"

Other than leading Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, I'm not sure there's a bigger scam going on in America today than running "public" broadcast outlets.....
