Mr. Cartoon on WMXE

We had sort of a snowball thing happen on the morning show this morning... Someone qualified for a contest and I recognized his name as a former WSAZ Intern who played "Beeper" on Mr. Cartoon some years ago. We called the guy up and after much prodding and prize offers.. he finally confessed to his role on the show. This led to the phones ringing off the hook with callers sharing their Mr. Cartoon memories. One of Jule Huffman's relatives called in and gave us an update on him..

A few minutes later he called the show himself. It was a great to hear him again, and thought some of you might be interested to know how he is doing. he is now 85 years old, but sharp as a tack. He recently had a minor heart attack and surgery but is recovering at his home near Huntington. The end of the interview was pretty emotional.. with him telling us how much he missed being Mr. Cartoon.. and me telling him how much we missed the show and him.

Anyway, Mr. Cartoon is alive and well.. and still an awesome guy!

MyZ should air classic Mr. Cartoon episodes in the original time slot (4pm I think)? The kids would benefit from having something other than Springer/Maury/etc. to watch, and their 30-something parents could see themselves from the past!!!!

We talked about that actually.. and he said he could come back and do the job again! The guy just really loves children.. he said that several times during the interview. Kids have nothing like that today. What the F$#% is a Poke' Mon, anyway?

This is a really cool story. I wish I could have heard it (the unfortunate situation of living out of state to keep my radio addiction alive and well). Any chance of a podcast available (you can't blame me for asking)? Hearing about this brought back some fun memories.

Seriously.. I told Jule about remembering the exact moment that I realized that Mr. Cartoon was also the weatherman. I told him it was like finding out there was no Santa. I remember that exact moment, and I am 38 years old. That just shows you that either:

a) I was a stupid kid.
b) The Red Jacket, Hat, and Huge Harry Carey Glasses were magic.
c) The show, itself was magic.
