South Carolina Republican Senator Jim DeMint’s amendment to prohibit a return of the repealed Fairness Doctrine passed the Senate today by a vote of 87-11. The amendment was tacked on to a bill to give DC a representative in the House, an act that was tough to get most lawmakers to reject. While the vote puts the Senate “on record” as being against a revival of the statute that was set aside in 1987, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) also won approval for an alternate amendment to order the FCC to encourage radio ownership “diversity.” Although President Barack Obama has said he would oppose any attempts to legislate a return of the Doctrine, critics have argued that initiatives such as Durbin’s amendment and other proposals are simply “stealth” attempts to reimpose the Fairness Doctrine under a new, less tarnished name.
