This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Barbie could get an unwelcome present for her 50th birthday: outlawed in West Virginia.

A state lawmaker proposed a bill Tuesday to ban sales of the iconic Mattel doll and others like her.

The proposal from Democratic Delegate Jeff Eldridge says such toys influence girls to place too much importance on physical beauty, at the expense of their intellectual and emotional development.

A Mattel spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday. The Barbie doll officially turns 50 on March 9, and the toy maker has made big plans this year to mark the anniversary.

Barbie has had her foes over that half-century. Critics say the doll promotes materialism and an unnatural body image.

I certainly agree with the delegate from Lincoln County.
He didn't go far enough. Ban Godzilla figurines too.
I would not want my kids to grow up into 500 foot tall,
fire-breathing, dinosaur-like, atomic mutants.
Banning dolls would stop that.

Sadly, yes.

How long before the nation's comedians gleefully point this out?

Perhaps West Virginia taxpayers should invest in creating the Cathy Cameltoe series of dolls, designed to boost the self-esteem of young female welfkin mountaineers everywhere. You could start with an 18 year old that weighs 300 pounds, with Mountain Dew mouth, bleach blonde hair, and several visible tattoos -- including the obligatory tramp stamp and "love" and "hate" across both knuckles. Accessories could include a selection of mixed race babies, a food stamp and medical card combo, and a home confinement bracelet.

Whaddya think?

The sad thing is that (normally) this delegate is a right-thinking individual, so I don't know where this comes from. He is a former teacher and social worker so I don't know what the hell is up with this. I interviewed him today and will play it back on our local talk show tomorrow, but I don't know that I came away with any more of a clear picture of what is going on in head than I did before.
