1520 WLGC goes 80's?!

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

They don't show a nighttime authorization on the FCC site, 5kW day, 280W critical hours.

8W wouldn't really be worth running... I doubt that signal would even make it to Greenup from where the tower is.

Have to admit I love the nostalgia... Not only an 80's station, but on AM and sort of recapturing the sound of WIRO from the glory days.

Just replace the popping noises with the warm HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM from WIRO's old Gates console.

Too bad these old liners will never be heard again:

"1230 W-I-R-O, we're more than music!"

"The BIG I 1 2 3 0!"

"1230 W-I-R-O The Big I!"

Another request... Can we PLEASE fix the transmitter so it WORKS when the station signs on?

Having the damn thing actually ON THE AIR during morning drive would probably help, uh ratings.

Southern Gospel - Morning Drive
80s Music until sign-off.

Nice.

They need a positioning-statement like, "From sideburns and bad-polyester to hairspray and parachute-pants 1520 WLGC".

At least this morning the transmitter worked and it was listenable instead of getting about 5 seconds of song every 20 seconds.

Looks like they sign on at 6AM, run 80's until 8AM, what I call "Redneck Gospel" (Ronnie Bell has been around forever) from 8-10, then 80's until sign off which is around 7PM.

Say it isn't so.
Ronnie did AM drive on WIRO in the late 70s/early 80s and he was probably 40 or 50-something back then...

Yes he is. He's done his gospel show on WLGC for a long time.

1260 WNXT also still has Zeke Mullins as well.

Hometown at least seems to show some respect to traditions.

The selection of 80's music on WLGC is actually quite good... And they throw in some obscure stuff and some songs that are frankly funny to hear on AM... Such as in the same half hour hearing Queen "Under Pressure" then Vanilla Ice "Ice Ice Baby" :)

Also there are no commercials...

All in all I think this is a helluva good idea to make use of an otherwise useless station. And yes, they'd get better ratings with this format on their FM than being the #3 country station :) Definitely having WIRO flashbacks. WIRO was the station I listened to most from when I got my first radio (AM) in the mid 70's pretty much until KEE sucked me in my Jr year of high school (1989).

When he was at WCMI, when the station went ABC Talknet, he was the morning guy..with the same gospel show!! One the first morning of the Talknet format, we went from Ronnie Bell to Dr Susan Forward talking about sex!! IT WAS AWESOME!!

I didn't seriously move to FM from AM until 1988 or so, and I was listening mostly to WAMX which was far better than KEE (at least to my ears). Then they went AC as WRVC-FM and KEE was the only game in town for FM top 40. WCMI-FM was AC, and everything else was country!

As far as I can tell they are signing OFF at 7:15PM right now. So they aren't using post sunset (though I haven't driven closer to see if they are way lower than 250W, probably not since I am using a GE SR3 and a Grundig G5)). They sign on at 6AM, which is pre sunrise, and are probably using 250W, just a guess based on the coverage. Technical problems are way down though they still have problems with automated weather spots, etc being cut over by music or other liners.

Music variety has increased... I've heard stuff I've not heard since, well the 80's. Whomever is doing the music is doing a good job, too bad it's a crappy AM signal that it's on. I'd love to hear this in AM Stereo.

I've been listening so much that I've gotten USED to AM music again and FM or Sirius sounds weird :)

Musically this is as good an 80's station as I've ever heard... Truly a good job with what they have to do it with. And seriously, if you put this on the FM it'd rate better than the #3 country station :) The variety very much replicates what I recall of Top 40 radio of the time... Hard rock, pop, dance, country crossovers, and the like. Of course part of the nostalgia for me is that this is how I FIRST heard an awful lot of this music the first time, on AM...

Lester... You seriously need to get here before it goes away.

"Twelve Thirty W I R O... The Big I!"
"Super 13 CMI!"

/sigh

Something seriously got lost from AM to FM... On AM, the main presentation of the song is most important. Center channel for the win.

Example of an 80's crossover country song that should be on WLGC... This was played on the other AM stations in it's day, including WIRO, WCMI, and WGNT.

I am glad to hear all the positive comments about the new format. This is my baby and I am trying to keep up with the format and all the other engineering duties I have.
The station still sounds a bit rough as it needs a better automation system which I am working on. I am also working to get the technical problems corrected with the signal. Limited budget and no sales make it very hard to get things done. I hope a serious interest develops in the market. Arbitron numbers? I hope.
Thank you all for listening.

Thanks, but I think "The 80's Station" works just fine. Although it has been suggested that I call it "Fred's Laptop"

As gracious as your offer is I don't think a dollar is going to help much. :D

I've noticed that you aren't using post sunset authority and signing off right at sunset. Transmitter glitches? WLGC last time I used to listen to it (the 1 on 1 sports days) used to stay on the air and be listenable for a couple hours post sunset at least...

Were still trying to remove all the bugs out of the system. At some point in the past, I don't know when, the Sine Systems was programmed with the wrong times for on-off-low power. It will be corrected soon.

Awesome. I think the music being programmed is excellent, on par with the best 80's station I ever heard, the one that used to be in Charlotte.

And I heard a LOT of this for the first time ON AM... WIRO, WCMI, WGNT :)

It was weird hearing an early Beastie Boys rap song "Brass Monkey" on AM though :)

What I'd love to see is you get WLGC 1520 on as a web stream. I think that an all 80's station could get a web following for sure.

Also, Mark, Ted, and Scott definitely could help you with programming some more surprises into the playlist...
