In How The Mighty Fall, his latest book, Jim Collins lists the five stages an organization goes through on the way to failure.
  • Stage 1: Hubris born of success
    Stage 2: Undisciplined pursuit of more
    Stage 3: Denial of risk and peril
    Stage 4: Grasping for salvation
    Stage 5: Capitulation to irrelevance or death

Sirius XM and Myspace is at stage 4.

Google and Facebook is teetering between 2 and 3.

Where is radio?

I don't think Sirius ever reached Stage 1 -- if they reached hubris, it was only after the war with XM tilted their way (highlighted by Sirius signing Stern and XM signing Oprah to a horrid 3-year, $55 million deal).

Google has enough ad revenue money that they can afford to dabble in side projects that may or may not pan out.

As for Facebook, I agree with you strongly.

Where is MySpace in the stage list?
