Obviously the "all mega emo whiner rock all the time" format is a failure.

Classic (ie: REAL) rock?

Depends on how you define "failure." I wouldn't consider Z Rock a failure at all.

As far as commercials go, Net Spots and bonuses are pretty much all that has been spinning on that dial spot for the last 4-5 years...

sxeriously though, I've always wanted to take a stab at talk radio... just seems like it would be fun, just get in front of a mic, shoot your mouth off, and remember not to swear or actually say anything truly offensive.... I could definitely do that...

As a new employee (part time) of the News/Talk station here in the Triad, I'll let you know how it goes.
Of course, I've been pretty much doing talk in the morning for the last decade.

The problem is the music is less than half assed. Rock radio pretty much is rock radio, it's formula hasn't changed in decades. The problem is the content isn't there like it used to be. There hasn't been a great rock album released in almost 20 years. Without albums, the traditional album rock format just, well, won't work. Fact of the matter is, rock is dead, it's been "living" off the remnant body heat of the corpse for 15 years, and simply isn't ever going to be a popular mass format again without new artists and content. Country music has been fading as a format in recent years for much the same reasons, the same played out style and formula being repeated, no artist innovation, etc.

Actually, you can say that about every music genre. The record labels, dying from an obsolete revenue model from the last century, simply aren't producing talent like it used to.

You're extrapolating from your personal taste onto the greater population.

I may be doing a little extrapolating myself here, but I can't see how any true rock fan cannot give The Foo Fighters at least an honorable mention... Their entire existence has been post-Nirvana.

Wheels is new. It's pretty awesome, too.

Talking about your personal opinion on the quality of music is not extrapolating, it's talking about your personal opinion. Stating your personal opinion or tastes as fact that applies to everyone else is extrapolating.

Nirvana sucked. Their albums were huge pieces of shit with no redeeming qualities whatsoever and they were one of the worst live bands I ever saw. I had to sit through that shit twice. I turned down and/or avoided all other opportunities to see them.

Foo Fighters is an honest to goodness significant band. I only personally like maybe 7 or 8 of their songs, but their talent, songcraft, and musicianship are exceptional.
