I learned the hard way back in January...
Dog messing with cat all morning. Cat must have been tired and aggravated. Cat sitting on floor. I reach down to pet cat from the side. Cat jumps two feet in the air and was all claws. Claws got my left wrist.
Still have scars four months later.
Dog should be grateful it wasn't his nose.
