Health.com ranks West Virginia as the most depressing state in America

An online health and medical publication ranked West Virginia as the most depressing state in America. Health.com is a website which uses real-life examples and up-to-date health and medical information by selected editors and journalists. The website ranked the Mountain State last or next-to-last in every mental-health category on their list. Some of the categories included the average number of "mentally unhealthy" days residents have per month and the percentage of people who experience frequent mental distress (15%).

Health.com blamed West Virginias state of depression on most of its residents living in rural areas (about two-thirds). Based on a 2000 study, Health.com found that nearly one in three residents living in rural areas of the state had a high level of depression symptoms and nearly half had never been treated for depression by a physician.

Rounding out the websites Top 10 were Tennessee, where nearly 10% of its residents have experienced an episode of major depression in the previous year, Oklahoma, Nevada, Missouri, Mississippi and Michigan, which has an unemployment rate of 20 percent in some of its counties. Kentucky was No. 7 followed by Indiana and Arkansas.
