WVU thugs strike again

Post by CoolBreeze »

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- One Louisiana State University fan suffered severe head injuries and others also were hurt when unknown assailants attacked them after Saturday's football game in Morgantown.

Authorities have not identified the victims but Helen Smith said her son-in-law, Marcus Mason, and daughter, Hannah, of Pittsburgh, were among those attacked. She said they were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic outside Milan Puskar Stadium when someone threw a rock in the car's driver's side window.

Hannah, who is 22 weeks pregnant, was driving at the time. The rock landed in her lap, Smith said.

When Marcus asked a group of people who threw the rock, several individuals approached the vehicle.

Randy Smith, Hannah's father, said three men attempted to drag two of the couples' friends from the back seat before grabbing Marcus. They then pulled him out of the vehicle and started beating him.

Hannah rushed around the car to her husband and tried to stop the attackers, he said. She was knocked down in the process.

Smith said other drivers in traffic did not attempt to stop the beating until Hannah started screaming at the attackers, saying she was pregnant.

"I think it probably saved his life. He was not conscious or moving when she got to him," he said.

Marcus sustained a broken nose, a crushed eye socket and a fractured frontal bone in the middle of his forehead, Hannah said in a Facebook post Sunday.

One of these days those thugs are going to attack the wrong person, and them there will be a funeral or two. these thugs should realize that a lot of people are armed. try and attack me and you will find out if there is a hell.

I spent 25 minutes defending WVU and Mountaineer fans during the LSU game, and this is the thanks I get. I'm done. I try my best to tell people that WVU fans are not all dumbass rednecks, but this kind of thing just turns my stomach.

75,000 WVU fans didn't lay a hand on anybody. Hate on WVU all you want, but Morgantown becomes the biggest city in WV on game day, and there is going to be crime. I've been going to Lions and Tigers games in Detroit for over 30 years, and people get MURDERED on a regular basis leaving those games...that could only mean we are a bunch of animals, right? I was assulted by students with a liquor bottle at a Marshall game in 1997, but I'm not stupid enough to say Marshall fans are thugs. Thugs attended a football game, that's it. 25,000 nice people didn't lay a hand on me. Your logic makes no sense, but it gets you fired up to hate on WVU, so I supppose it does serve a purpose.

I know the vast majority of fans of practically any college or pro sports team don't do any violent acts or harassment to visiting fans. There are always a few isolated incidents done by thugs and idiots.

However, from firsthand reports from Marshall and VT fans that have gone to Morgantown for games, there are considerably more of those kinds of things in Morgantown than anywhere else these fans go. That's consistent - not just on one trip but trip after trip.

There are Marshall fans who will never go to another WVU-Marshall game.

there are a lot of problems at any sports game. when it concerns certain schools they blow it way out of proporation. I believe this is because these news people just don't have enough to report so they have to blow everytning way up to make it look like they are doing their jobs and hope to sell more papers or get more viewers. If this had happened several years ago we would have never heard about it. but with the rapid way news is spread today we hear much more of the things we would not have heard just because people think it is big news. It's only a game. Why people get so upset over the outcome It's only a game.

This being a broadcasting forum, let me try this angle. Your argument is just like when a listener comes up and says "Everybody I know listens to rock, and you guys are the best...you have to be the number one station, we all love you guys." I reply, "Actually country is number 1 in this market...by a mile." Listener, "Dude, I know everybody in town, and nobody listens to country.' There is no winning this argument without whipping out Arbitron data and explaining how it works. It's the same with these fans. They can only speak of their observable surroundings, which are heavily influenced by the VERY few bad things that have happened to a SMALL few in the past. This is psychology 101. I go to WVU games with my Herd loving buddies, and I have never heard a peep out of them regarding harassment. Does this mean your friends are liars and mine are lucky? Of course not. Humans tend to remember the bad, and disregard the dozens of times nothing happened. I've been going to Marshall games for years, but I remember two things. Randy Moss's last game, and the time I got sucker punched with a bottle. Poll a large group of fans from a visiting team for 5 years at the 30 largest football schools in the country. I'll bet WVU is no worse than VA Tech, Clemson, Florida, Texas, etc. etc.

Funny you would say that. My Dad was given a tryout with the Tigers back in the mid to late '30's. One of the reasons he did not sign was because he witnessed someone being murdered in the stands after the game the night of the tryout.

And then again, Marv Owen was entrenched at third base for the Tigers. That was the other reason...

It's a great city, but that kind of thing is all too real. That's really cool your dad even got a shot at the bigs. My dad still plays with his grass from field of the 84 World Series. I'm sure the old man would give up a kidney just to rake the dirt in the infield.

While I appreciate your stance, Shaffer, I think your numbers might be skewed...
Smith said other drivers in traffic did not attempt to stop the beating until Hannah started screaming at the attackers, saying she was pregnant.
Who lets something like that happen?

While I understand Schaffers "Few bad apples" thesis, I did find the actions of SOME of the Eers fans during the Pitt game a few years ago in Morganhole over the top rediculous...

Combining that with being stuck on a bus for 3 hours with Eers fans that were jealous over the Marshall movie, which if they only watched the damn thing they would realize that the film makes BOTH schools look good, and its hard not to wonder what the Hell is wrong with some of those people..
