Data collected by the State Farm insurance company show the chances of a West Virginia driver will strike a deer are 1 in 53, the highest odds in the U.S. That is nearly 50% higher than the second-highest state, Iowa, where the odds were 1 in 77. South Dakota (1 in 81) and Pennsylvania (1 in 86) ranked third and fourth. Nearly 2% of West Virginia drivers collided with a deer in the past year, a level that is almost four times the national average.

Pennsylvania, more populated than the states ahead of it in the per-capita rankings, led with the highest number of deer collisions. State Farm estimated a total of 101,299 deer-vs.-car incidents in Pennsylvania in the second half of 2010 and the first half of 2011, the time period examined in the most recent iteration of State Farm's annual study. No other state reached six digits.

This does not shock me with the deer population that lives in near my place. I thought it was bad when I would see a couple of deer a week last year by my old pad in the city limits of Philly, but I can walk a few feet from my current house just outside of Valley Forge and I can see 5-10 deer grazing any time I want. These deer are still a bit shy in south eastern PA, but I have been in parts of this state where the deer have scared me by not leaving when I got near them.

We live in the city limits of Huntington, on the hillside to the west as you come into town from the Hal Greer exit of I-64.

There is a herd of deer probably numbering between 1 and 2 dozen on our street. I say that because I saw as many as 10-12 together last year at one time, and judging from the number of young we've seen this year it could have doubled.

Luckily we haven't seen any casualties in the 22 years we've lived there. The street is about a mile long and dead ends so there's no thru traffic.

They have it wrong. The only place where I have seen road kill disappear within few hours of first appearing on the highway is the stretch of U.S. Route 250 between Charlottesville and Richmond. It kinda spooked me because I acutally enjoyed a couple of the roadside barbecue stands around Oilville, VA.

Even along Route 3 through Boone Co., road kill is not food, but a properly flattened, sun baked "sail bunny" would certainly entertain the children for at least a day.

West Virginia in the past had a group of people that when you hit a deer they would come out and retrive it , dress it and package the meat and take it to local food banks. I haven't heard of them around lately. I think it is a waste of meat that could feed a needy family when it could be gotten fast enough so that it wouldn spoil they would also take deer that were just being hunted for sport but that the hunter didn't want the meat just the head. they helped feed a lot of families. when prepared right deer meat is good tasting and no fat.
