Sheriff sez, "Get a gun".
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -- The Spartanburg County Sheriff is known for speaking his mind, and at a news conference on Monday, he didn't hold back his anger and frustration after a woman was attacked in a park over the weekend.
Investigators said 46-year-old Walter Lance grabbed a woman who was walking her dog in Milliken Park on Sunday afternoon. They said Lance choked the woman, made her take off her clothing and tried to rape her. (Full Story)
Lance is in custody and was denied bond on Monday.
Sheriff Chuck Wright opened his news conference by saying, "Our form of justice is not making it."
He said, "Carry a concealed weapon. That'll fix it."
Wright said Lance had been charged numerous times with crimes again women, and other crimes such as resisting arrest and escape. Wright said Lance had been on probation for a federal gun charge.
He referred to Lance repeatedly as an "animal," and expressed his disgust about Lance's long record and the attack.
Wright said Lance has had more than 20 charges dating back to 1983.
Wright said Lance has been in jail more often than he has, and he runs the jail, and he said he gets out easier. He punctuated by saying, "And I'm aggravated."
He said he doesn't believe every person needs to be kept in jail, but he said, "I don't think this animal deserves to be out in our society, walking alongside our women."
Wright said,"Liberals call me and tell me the chain-gang form of justice isn't working. Well, let me inform you, your form of justice isn't working either."

Would have been easier for him to just say, "I'm an incompetent idiot. Replace me."

So, Bob... what's your solution to the problem?
Complete police state? Maybe cops every 20 feet to make sure something like this doesn't happen?
Close the parks all together? Maybe convert them to communes?
I know! BAN WOMEN FROM RUNNING ALONE! I'm sure they won't mind. (But wait! She wasn't alone! She had a dog!)
So, let's hear your solution!

Well, seeing as how violent crime rates have been trending downward steadily for the last twenty years, I think most jurisdictions have it pretty well in hand.
I mean, Tombstone was a fun movie, but the Ok Corral gets tired after a while.
And the person you're most likely to shoot with your gun is your wife/husband or kids.
Hmmm....they DID catch the guy involved didn't they?

This is true, as concealed gun carrying increases, the violent crime rate goes down.Bob Campbell wrote:Well, seeing as how violent crime rates have been trending downward steadily for the last twenty years

In the Darwinian scheme of things, this would work itself out just fine. However, it's not true.

And Tombstone, and the rest of the "old west" wasn't nearly as violent as portrayed in the movies.

And as I'm sure you know, there is zero statistical correlation between concealed carry states and crime rates. They've dropped as much or more in states with the most strict gun control laws.

Well, if guns scare you, then I'm pretty sure you shouldn't have one.
I bet this morning's victim in St Albans was glad he had one. http://www.wowktv.com/story/15934934/ma ... -st-albans

Re: Sheriff sez, "Get a gun".
the national murder rate dropped 5 precent between 2009 and 2010. In New York City, where gun ownership is severely restriced, it increased by 15 precent. where ccw premits went up the crime rate went down. would you want to try and rob a person when there is a good chance they are armed ? and the cops can't be everwhere.

The NYC murder is still down over the last decade. And guns have been hard to come by there for quite a while. There is still no evidence showing CCW has ANY correlation to crime rates.
And were I a thief with a gun I would have no compunction about robbing someone who may be armed. I'd shoot first, rob second.

Re: Sheriff sez, "Get a gun".
they state that the murder rate INCREASED by 15 precent. now that does not look like a decrease? during a weeklong period earlier this month (October I think)the number of people shot rose 150 percent over 2010. these are from the NRA web site www.nra.org then look at the scroll on Bloomberg.

Thanks for the warning. If I ever hear you in my house at night, I'll keep that in mind.Bob Campbell wrote:.

You would pick an easier target.
