Want to win an election? Launch a pirate radio station!

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Want to win an election? Launch a pirate radio station!

Post by SPIKE NESMITH! »

Ah, the 1980s. Ireland was full of pirates because there was no legally sanctioned independent local radio. Since the 60s, anyone was free to start their own stations and the government looked the other way unless you were interfering with essential services. Radio Nova operated with a 40 share and profits hitting close to $4 million US.

Fianna Fail, an Irish political party, got in on the act too. They launched their own pirate station, won the election, reneged on their promise to legalise commercial radio and then started shutting down the pirates.

Woefully short, but intriguing just the same.
So sayeth His Royal Highness King Spike; greatest broadcasting talent of his generation.
