"The Power of Three: WTRF, Fox Ohio Valley & WTRF-ABC"
A local friend of mine just caught a promo on FOX Ohio Valley for "The Power of Three: WTRF, Fox Ohio Valley & WTRF-ABC" Anyone heard anything about this yet within or outside the vast WVMH evil empire???

Uh-oh. Looks like an 'opportunity' for upper Ohio Valley communities (Sistersville, New Matamoras and points north) to lose WTAE if the wobbly empire can cut some deals with cable carriers.

I'll explain the power of 3 when it comes to WVMH. 3 X 0 = 0.

Dude, it's a third digital subchannel.WV Newsnut wrote:A local friend of mine just caught a promo on FOX Ohio Valley for "The Power of Three: WTRF, Fox Ohio Valley & WTRF-ABC" Anyone heard anything about this yet within or outside the vast WVMH evil empire???
Heck, if WPXI can do it, why shouldn't the WVMH empire do it?

I wonder why WOWK can't figure out something to run in all that extra digital space/opportunity?
At least WTRF found some needs to fill (fox/abc).
Maybe WOWK could find a Korean/Hmong channel to run.

So am I to understand now WTAE could be WTRF news like FOX is WTRF news? Okay, I see what is going on...WTRF news sucks so in order to get the valley to watch just try to buy up all the stations? WTRF-FOX OV can say they are number 1 at 10:00pm.

Three subchannels?
Is it possible to fit 3 full HDTV feeds into one stream? Or will they be 3 shitty 420p video streams passed of as HD?

Not really.
You might get one HD signal but would have to be very careful with your bit budget on the other two sdtv streams.
With CBS and Fox you might have to choose which Sunday football game is in HD.

cable could be fed HD of all three
Aircheck? You'd make a great board op.

Correct.Dave Loudin wrote:cable could be fed HD of all three
Also correct. The real problem is when management is too... uhh, errr, "price-conscious" to buy the good video stuff from these people.genlock wrote:You might get one HD signal but would have to be very careful with your bit budget on the other two sdtv streams.

At least WVMH is taking advantage of an opportunity in Wheeling.
Wheeling is not a very viable market or there would have been
full service stations there on Fox and ABC.
In Huntington-Charleston, WVMH seem to be brain dead.
There must be something Bray can do with that bandwidth.
Besides colorbars.

Re: "The Power of Three: WTRF, Fox Ohio Valley & WTRF-ABC"
When WTRF started Fox OV Comcast dropped WPGH Pittsburgh. Now on the ABC side in the Wheeling area we get WTAE Pittsburgh and WYTV??? out of Youngstown. Not sure if that is their call letter or not I know its a youngstown ABC that we get. I'm hoping they don't drop WTAE but instead drop the Youngstown station. But, my guess is we will lose WTAE which is one of the better stations in the area.

Re: "The Power of Three: WTRF, Fox Ohio Valley & WTRF-ABC"
Probably drop them both.
WTRF will be your ABC affiliate.
WTRF will be your Fox affiliate.
WTRF will be your CBS affiliate.
One stop shopping.
Kinda like clearchannel.

My guess is that they drop WYTV, since Youngstown is way outta the area. On Comcast we have 2 of each big "3" KDKA & WTRF. WTOV & WPXI, and most likely would be WTAE & WTRF/ABC Ohio Valley. Since there weren't 2 FOX affiliates within the area to chose from big city-wise, I can kinda see why they went with the LOCAL Fox Ohio Valley. Of course I could always be completely wrong

Re: "The Power of Three: WTRF, Fox Ohio Valley & WTRF-ABC"
Dropping WTAE would be a big mistake for comcast. They were able to slide FoxOV in over WPGH and very few actually noticed. But, many people in the area watch WTAE for their news coverage, mainly because the quality of news covereage in the Steubenville/Wheeling area is not that great. When we start seeing WTRF news instead of the trusted WTAE news people will notice.

I don't like where this whole subchannel thing is going...
How long before it will be used as an excuse to drop distant networks in "short" markets because the markets will no longer be "short"?
