Why would you galvanize stainless steel?

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Why would you galvanize stainless steel?

Post by genlock »

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Thieves who aren't afraid of a little heavy lifting made off with more than $7,000 worth of galvanized stainless steel.

The theft happened overnight Tuesday at H3 Steel in Peoria.

The items reported stolen Wednesday included a 1,000-pound staircase that was taken from a flatbed trailer, according to a report.

The employee who reported the theft told police it would take several people and a truck to move the items.

Interesting. I had no idea that they galvanized stainless steel, or even had a need to, but apparently it's a common practice for added protection:

The overall effectiveness of galvanized stainless steel is heavily dependent on environment and the quality of zinc processing. Galvanized stainless steel is a durable material that can last for more than a century. In more rural areas where automotive emissions and pollution are at a minimum, galvanized stainless steel can last for well over 150 years. Even under conditions that promote corrosion, galvanized stainless steel can still hold up for between 50 and 100 years.
