CHARLESTON, W.Va.
A West Liberty University scientist has identified a crayfish species that is unique to West Virginia.
Assistant biology professor Zac Loughman discovered the creature in the upper Greenbrier River and several of its tributaries.

Loughman tells the Charleston Gazette that other biologists had found it but didn't realize it was a unique species. He says it looks similar to another species found in the Greenbrier watershed, but the claw on the crayfish he identified is more elongated than the claw of the other one. The newly discovered species is also skinnier, and there are other subtle differences.

Loughman documented the discovery in a scientific paper co-authored by West Virginia University biologist Stuart Welsh and Thomas Simon, a senior research scientist at Indiana State University.
